WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

Malawi is a beautiful and one of the peaceful country in Africa. Although it is land locked, it can be easily accessed through the three neighbouring countries Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. This can translate into tour packages which can including one or all of the countries. Malawi tourism industry has not really developed much. Looking at countries like Kenya and South Africa, it will be wise for Malawi tourism board to use the model for these countries to develop the industry as its one of the lucrative industry which can create jobs for its citizens rather than depend on tobacco which the western countries are trying to use less to to links with cancer. Another thing to address is accommodation which seems to be very expensive for a third world country. Visitor visa is another thing the government needs to look at as to be competitive and attract more tourist, the fee has to be looked at. In all this is one of beautiful countries in Africa where you can visit game reserves, national parks, sugar plantations, rubber and coffee plantations and tea plantation in Mulanje where you can also try to climb the Mulanje mountain if you feel adventurous enough.
                                                                                     
                                                                                                  
 

PRESENT TIME

Malawi is a landlocked country but has beautiful landscape and alot of natural resources to explore. Place along side Lake Malawi from northern region to southern region will keep anyone who love nature busy. Lake Malawi is known to have more different spicies of fish than any other fresh water lake. So talking about the Lake Shore, you can start exploring Liwonde national park where you can see alot of mvuu {hippos} and crocodile.you can go on to explore other areas like salima where you can visit cotton plantations, then Nkhotakota where Dr David Livingston visited and also there is a game reserve where baboons, elephants, lions and other animals can be see. There is also a sugar plantation and factory to add to the itenary. Then after Nkhotakota there is a place called Nkhatabay where there is tea and rubber plantations plus nice sandy beaches. There is a road which pass through the game reserve which can take you to Kasungu district where you can visit Kamuzu Academy grammar school and the national park. this is also where farmers in Malawi grow tobacco. This district is just a few miles away from the capital city Lilongwe. Malawians are very welcoming and most of the citizens can speak english so if you need directions or any information there will be no shortage of helpers. Staple food is nsima which is just a thick porridge and a side of meat or vegetable stew. The currency is Kwacha which last time i checked was around k1000 to £1 and that can you get you three bottles of beer or 5 bottles of juice. Malawi is the only country which has a carlsberg brewery outside Denmark and has also a coca-cola factory. This are just a few places to visit but the list is endless.

THE PROGRESSION

Malawi gained its independence from Britain in 1964. Dr hastings Kamuzu Banda shortly formed a government with his party Malawi Congress Party. The country was divided into 28 districts which then was used for ease of conducting census and any developments so that they can be allocated equally. The capital city was then called Zomba until it was moved to now Lilongwe which is pretty much the centre of the country. Malawi has four major cities namely Lilongwe, Zomba, Mzuzu and Blantyre which was named after Blantyre in Scotland because of doctor David Livingston who once went to Malawi to spread the Gospel. He visited places like Nkhotakota where a big Baobab tree on which he rested is still standing up to now. The tree is sometimes called the tree of life as it can withstand hash temperatures.Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world with around 50 percent of the population living below poverty line.And because of this rapid population growth, efforts to reduce poverty has proved a challenge and any economic gains has been eroded by the population boom. The country has a large number of christians as christianity is a biggest domination to the early European evangelisation of the country. This is followed by Islam which is more concentrated to the districts which are closer to the lake.

THE EARLY YEARS

Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda became the leader for Malawi from 1964 to 1994. Born 1898 and died 1997. He received much of his education in Europe. In 1941 he went to study at Edinburgh University and upon completion he returned to malawi to speak against colonialism and advocate for independence. He founded the first grammar school in Malawi called Kamuzu academy. He introduced and maintained a relatively good education system where pupil were taught in english and made sure education was free for all. He also introduced young pioneers movement where young adults went to learn new skills like carpentry, farming, counting.
He was the president for Malawi for 31 years during which the country had only one party called Malawi Congress Party. He supported the Vietnam war because of his hate for communism. He ruled Malawi with an iron fist but made sure in the process that the cost of living was cheap as the government subsidised most of the basic needs for the citizens like sugar, salt, oil, cement for building and agriculture products as Malawi being a land locked country, depended on farming maize and tobacco for exports.
He will be remembered for being the first president of Malawi who could only speak english not his native language. Build infrastructure, lower crime rate in the country, supported women rights,educated work force, good health system as medical care was free.
